[Exclusive] Coldplaying.com Catches Up With Coldplay's Oxfam Tour Co-ordinator
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Pete Lusby is currently touring the world with Coldplay, promoting Oxfam's campaigns to concert-goers. Joined by teams of dedicated volunteers, Oxfam are raising awareness of, and advising of how we can all take action to overcome, poverty. Coldplaying.com caught up with Pete, via email, to find out more about life on tour, volunteering and Oxfam.Hi Pete! Thanks for sparing some of your time to answer some questions. How did you become involved with Oxfam?I'd always known about it from the Oxfam shops in Britain. I learnt more through a Development Studies course at university.. and seeing Oxfam at Glastonbury Festival. I started out working for Oxfam as an intern. I volunteered full-time for six months from April 2007. I was working as the assistant coordinator on the Oxfam GB Festivals programme. We were doing a similar thing to what we do on band tours. Volunteer campaigners helped over 101'000 festival-goers sign a Climate Change petition. We also had a chill-out/Fairtrade coffee/dance tent and an Oxfam Campervan, at some of the festivals which was great fun to work on. After that I worked on 'Oxjam', Oxfam's fundraising music festival in UK, another band tour with Klaxons in the UK, and then on fundraising challenge events like the London Marathon and Trailwalker. Then Coldplay came up... and I jumped at the chance. What's your favourite thing about working for Oxfam?I love meeting people who are enthusiastic about Oxfam's work to fight poverty, whether that's our volunteers or music fans who see us out there at the venues. It's good to know that the work we are doing can make a difference to people's lives. I won't lie to you though.. working at festivals and gigs is a great buzz too. [Article] Cold Comfort - Gwyneth 'Hubby-free' In Miami
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Rather than seeing her husband in concert in Oklahoma, Gwyneth Paltrow journeyed instead to the reopened Fontainebleau hotel, in Miami Beach, where she attended the Victoria's Secret fashion show. The hotel's owner, Jeff Soffer, a billionaire bachelor, flew her to the event aboard his private jet. The 35-year-old actress did visit Chris Martin in Dallas on Sunday after leaving Miami. Chris's spokesman, for his part, assures the media that the couple's marriage is strong enough to withstand the occasional absence. NME Removes News About Coldplay Split
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
NME has removed 9(blank page) their news article that rumoured Coldplay were to split in 2009-10. Earlier today, NME had a post up about Chris Martin discussing a possible Coldplay split in the next couple of years, but the post was since taken down, which leads Coldplaying to believe that someone swooped in to quell those rumours.Of course, once the rumour hits the web, it's very hard to take it off, and a quick Google News search reveals plenty of quotations on the prospect of a Coldplay breakup from Chris Martin.Let's be clear: this is nothing but pure rumour - Coldplay is not breaking up anytime soon, and we don't know if Chris Martin is telling the truth about the long term. We're not quite sure if he's ever telling the truth - as we found out after the Brit Awards 2005 - Coldplay don't 'just split up'. But Coldplay fans shouldn't be scouring the web for farewell tour tickets just yet.

Houston Review: Coldplay at Toyota Center
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Before last night, Houstonist may have told you, "Eh...they're OK live, but we haven't been blown away" if you'd asked whether or not you should go see the show. But, that was before last night. Although we weren't blown away (think David Bowie at The Woodlands in 2006), we gained a much better appreciation for Coldplay as live entertainers, report the Houstonist. The crowd was immediately engaged as the band took the stage playing Life in Technicolor. The energy continued to mount sending a tingle through the arena as Clocks followed shortly after. The music may be a bit mellow at times, but frontman Chris Martin could energize a rock with his dancing and flailing around the stage.Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland mugged for the photographers on the stage right set extension early in the show. Later, the pair were joined by drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman on the stage left extension for God Put a Smile on Your Face that evoked images of the group playing Rock Band as Champion banged an electronic drum kit and Martin played a small upright piano with Buckland and Berryman crammed in between like teenagers trying to fit between the TV, coffee table and recliner. Dallas Preview: Coldplay fans have much to look forward to tonight
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
No matter who may be the top selling act this year, alternative rock band Coldplay puts on the best show. On Sunday, Nov. 16. the band played at a sold-out Ford Stadium in Oklahoma City. Tonight they play in Dallas at the American Airlines Center.Coldplay's concert bombards the senses with visual effects, incredible music and even massive amounts of confetti that pour from the ceiling. More importantly, the band is entertaining, especially when front man Chris Martin uses his humility for comedic purposes. "Thanks for being here," Martin said after the first few songs. "We're a band called Coldplay. And I have to say that, as a band, we're thoroughly impressed for a Sunday night in Oklahoma,"The tour revolves around the group's album, "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends," released this past summer. The concert opened with the mostly instrumental "Life in Technicolor," a song perfectly suited for opening a show because it begins in a mellow state but finishes with energy. The group immediately launched into the first single from "Viva la Vida," "Violet Hill." The crowd sang along as Martin threw himself around the stage with abandon and gusto.Read the full preview article here

Houston Review: Coldplay Aftermath at Toyota Center
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
The problem with Chris Martin isn't the fact that the Coldplay frontman writes lyrics that resemble something that might come from the diary of a seventh grader who sniffs magic markers (snow, it turns out, is white after all). No, it's the fact that he almost forces people to take him so goddamn seriously. And the reason is simple: He is a a) rock star; b) a celebrity (or at least married to one); and c) a social activist. People often compare Martin's motives to those of Bono, but that's not exactly an apt comparison. Martin seems to be actively trying to dissociate himself from activists like Bono 'Bono is a rock star who makes shitty music, but also a social activist who is trying to actually make social changes (Third World debt, etc) ' while Martin is a pseudo-rock star who makes shitty music with designs on being perceived to be a social activist. His political rhetoric is foggy - we all got a pamphlet from Oxfam upon entering Toyota Center, but who reads pamphlets? - just like his music. It appeals to people who put value in clich's, and this has turned Martin into a critical punch line (Chuck Klosterman writes extensively about this, most particularly the 'fake love' Coldplay songs inevitably engender) and more importantly, a genius.Read the full review here

[Coldplay Oxfam Blog] Better make it quick
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Houston, Texas. Home of one very famous and powerful man. Home of the 'Rockets' NBA team. I have seen a few very tall people walking around today.. Yao Ming is not small. Here we are in a huge state. 13′000 people have come to see the Coldplay show. All 26′000-or-so eyes, are now firmly fixed on the stage, on 4 guys who formed a band thousands of miles away, and wrote a song, and it was called 'Yellow'. Probably also another 100 or so transfixed eyes are from crew members, waiting to jump in if anything goes wrong. I was just about to try to work out how many eyes might belong to people who also signed up with Oxfam tonight.. but i'm not sure my brain can do that..The crowd are making all sorts of noises. Some of them screaming so loud, they must be sore. I didn't think one pair of lungs could make that much noise, before I came on this tour. It's been a great night for our Oxfam group. Loads of people have shown an interest. Feet were flooding through the doors, and heading right over to our Oxfam tables. Listening carefully.. taking it in, and then taking the pen (don't worry i'm not going to go on about pens again - even though they are amazing).Read the full blog entry at the Oxfam Blog website here

Coldplay Roadie #42 - Blog #54
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Check out coldplay.com for a new blog entry: #42 and the Flaming Lips coverDiscuss this blog entry here onwards. It's pretty common for shows in more out of the way places to be the ones with the most enthusiastic crowds. Oklahoma then, has potential to be a right good night out. We arrive late in the day, as soundcheck has been bypassed yet again. At the top of the ramp that leads us into the bowels of the arena are three young ladies holding banners who giddily bounce and wave as the band's vehicles swing around the corner. This is obviously not the only time this has happened, however when we emerge some hours later after the show, they are still there and they are just as excitable. I really do hope that they saw the show in between. Not just because they clearly were wonderfully bonkers about the band, but because it was a particularly good night.Being in the hometown of the Flaming Lips means a lot at a Coldplay gig. Not only are the band great friends with the Lips guys, but so too are some of the crew. Hoppy, who looks after Chris's guitars worked for them many years ago. So did keyboard tech Neill Lambert (also now infamous as Chris's spooky Halloween attacker). I pass Neill in the corridor just as Wayne Coyne is making his way into the arena. Somewhat fittingly, Neill is in the middle of building a robot out of some metal electrical casings he's rescued from the dumpster. Proof if it were needed that we're heading now onto the beautiful slippery slope into what is commonly referred to as tour madness. I can only imagine that by Christmas, there are going to be a lot of inane grins and wonderfully skewed mental states. In the meantime, Neill's as yet unamed creation has been given a job in the Production Office dispensing setlists. I'm not sure he's even seen the Talk video. Maybe it's just subconscious...

Coldplay's Chris Martin Hints Retirement Next Year
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Chris Martin is planning to retire next year. The Coldplay frontman doesn't want to become an aging rock star and is keen to quit music before he feels too old, AHN and ContactMusic are reporting today. He said: "I'm 31 now and I don't think bands should keep going past 33. So we're trying to pack in as much as possible. Up until the end of next year, we'll just go for it in every sense. I don't believe in time off. We've still got our own hair, we can still fit into our musical trousers and we've got to make the most of that."The "Clocks" singer - whose last album 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends' topped the album charts in 36 countries - claim his band have only had such a successful year because their rivals have taken a break. He added: "The reason we're the biggest band in the world at the moment is because the others are on holiday. That's how you get your breaks. That's how the understudy gets his opportunity. While U2 and Green Day are away, we've gotten to make the most of it."You can join the discussion on this article here

Video Premiere: Coldplay's 'Lost' Featuring Jay-Z
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Coldplay tape their live appearance singing the remix version of 'Lost' featuring Jay-Z and release it as a music video for the remix.Coldplay have brought out a music video in support of "Lost+", the remix version of "Lost" which features Jay-Z. The video was shot at one of their live concerts. It shows the concert highlights including audience's high spirit. While "Lost" appears on Coldplay's fourth studio LP "Viva La Vida", "Lost+" is confirmed to be listed on their fifth mini album "Prospekts March [EP]". The EP is slated for release across U.S. on November 25 under Parlophone Records. Stressing that the songs in the EP are not throwaway tracks, bassist Guy Berryman said, "We didn't want to make the album too long. We thought the third record was too long, and we didn't want to make that mistake again. But these songs were too good just to be B-sides on singles. It's kind of meant to be an amendment to 'Vida La Vida'. We wanted people to hear that record as a standalone first, and not bombard them. We're really proud of it." Coldplay's "Lost+" music video is watchable via aceshowbiz here

Mystery deepens over Coldplay at Knebworth
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
The mystery surrounding a possible Coldplay gig at Knebworth House deepens. This week the band's frontman Chris Martin announced on their website the 2009 gig would not happen. He said: "Well, we tried to get Knebworth but it just wasn't possible. So we're having to think of something else. In fact, I think we have thought of something else. Hopefully we'll be able to announce it soon. And hopefully it's not the same day that Oasis have booked it."But speaking to the WHT Times 24 today (Tuesday), Knebworth's managing director Martha Lytton Cobbold said she was impressed with the buzz Coldplay's potential gig had created. She said: "The enquiry is still live as far as I'm concerned. We sent out potential dates and fees and so it's still with the band. It would be really nice if their fans and the band's desire to play here could be realised.

Houston Preview: Coldplay plays Toyota Center tonight
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Performing in Coldplay ' one of the world's biggest bands ' could get comfy. Too comfy, even. For bassist Guy Berryman, though, the nightly thrill is intact. After all the massive stadium shows and festivals, stepping on stage still brings that rush of blood.'I don't get nervous anymore. But I still get that great sense of excitement,' he says. 'I love that moment right before we go on, that anticipation of the lights coming down. It never tires for me.'Coldplay is on a global tour supporting Vida La Vida or Death and All His Friends, the British band's fourth album of moody, edge-of-artsy piano rock. In a year of music industry struggles, the album is a standout, having enjoyed the biggest debut yet for Berryman, vocalist-pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckman and drummer Will Champion: In the United States alone, the album sold 720,000 copies its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The band plays Toyota Center tonight. 'We've got four records now, so we have to get the balance right between the new album and the old songs people want to hear,' Berryman says. 'We try to make it as dynamic as possible from beginning to end.'Read the full preview article here

NME Reviews Coldplay's Prospekt's March EP (6/10)
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
The modern world, eh? Time was when you'd get an album, preceded and followed by a couple of singles, and that'd be that. Now, with labels desperately trying to figure out how to keep their clients' wares afloat, you get 'leaks' (some deliberate, some not), streams, downloads, covermounted singles, bonus discs, download-only singles, singles, albums, special edition albums, albums and singles. 'Prospekts March' ' billed as 'an EP of eight previously unreleased tracks' ' comes hot on the heels of a single release of 'Lost!' and will simultaneously be teamed with the album and released as 'Viva La Vida Prospekts March Edition'. Cripes! In truth, of the eight previously unreleased tracks, one is a not-massively-adventurous reshuffle (the Osaka Sun mix of 'Lovers In Japan'), another a 48-second long incidental piano piece, another the version of 'Lost!' that features Jay-Z on autopilot (ie, still quite amazing) but is on the flip of the single. So they don't count.

[Coldplay Oxfam Blog] Here's one I prepared earlier, from 'OK' City
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Good old fashioned pen and paper. How refreshing it can be. I'm scribbling away in the dark, next to stage right 'guitar world'. Writing on the back of a Coldplay setlist, and leaning on an Oxfam 'Health and Education FOR ALL' campaign booklet, on top of a road case..I just saw Chris Martin run out to the front of the Coldplay stage, to bounce with the packed audience to 'Viva La Vida'. There was a deafening roar when those strings kicked in. Now, if I look to my left, up the steps, there is Jonny, Will and Guy, starting up the thundering beat of 'Lost!'. Two of the roadies just walked past me, carrying a small flight of stairs.. I guess the band will be leaving the stage soon, for an arena tour, here in Oklahoma City. Now the screaming begins, as they make their way through a mixture of bemused and excited fans. Here come those roadies again, with that flight of stairs.Read the full blog entry at the Oxfam Blog website here

Further Kansas City Review: Coldplay brings life to Sprint Center (13 Nov)
Monday, November 17, 2008
Coldplay performed to an arena packed with enthused fans Nov. 13 at Kansas City's Sprint Center in the Power and Light District. The globe-trotting, British soft-rock group took the stage a little after 9 p.m., following two opening acts - a country-tinged alt-rock group from Texas, and a DJ who laid down beats in sync with an acid-trip-esque cartoon video.Fans rose from their seats and cheered as the first chords of "Life in Technicolor," the opening track on the band's most recent release, "Viva la Vida," began to echo through the arena. Chris Martin and company took the stage to fill in the song's synth orchestration with their own instrumentation - Martin doing acoustic guitar duties as well as vocals, Johnny Buckland on lead guitar, Guy Berryman on bass and Will Champion banging the drums.Read the full review at University News here

[Article] The Story Behind Coldplay's Magic Balls
Monday, November 17, 2008
A Tiny Scots company has been picked by Coldplay to help spice up the band's world tour. Edinburgh-based Pufferfish - set up by two entrepreneurial students - specialise in the 3-D spherical TV screen globes called PufferSpheres.Founders Will Cavendish and Ollie Collier came up with the idea for the inflatable display system while studying at Edinburgh University five years ago. Since they started up their business - which employs just seven staff - their PufferSphere has been used at functions for Google, Standard Life and London Science Museum. But they have just been given their biggest gig yet - for Coldplay's worldwide Viva La Vida tour. So far the giant TV screen globes have wowed crowds all over America but are set to return to their homeland when the band play a concert in Glasgow's SECC next month.Read the full article at WikiColdplay here

Another Oklahoma City Review: Coldplay entrances audience
Monday, November 17, 2008
It's hard to know what to love best about Coldplay ' the music, of course, every rock ballad a smashing crowd favorite, but there's also the high-energy stage presence of the band and its evangelical, marching-band leader, reports NewsOK.Then there's the colorful retro grunge clothing reminiscent of the '80s, the painted guitars and piano; and the pulsing laser light show complete with drop-down balloons that alternately change colors, go psychedelic or show images of the band in full symphony.Coldplay's debut concert at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City on Sunday night was a feast for the senses. The band had two opening acts: Sleepercar, out of El Paso, Texas, which pleased the crowd with its strong vocals and nice harmony; and Jon Hopkins, who's computer techno sound combined with animated graphics on a projector screen make one imagine a demented Dr. Seuss dropping acid.Read the full review article here

Coldplay Roadie #42 - Blog #53
Monday, November 17, 2008
Check out coldplay.com for a new blog entry: #42 and the exit strategyDiscuss this blog entry here onwards [thanks mimixxx]I start the day in Minnesota by going to the wrong arena. I've left the hotel in search of breakfast and spot the Target Center where we played last time we were here. Although I'm not due in for a good while yet, I know that catering will be up, so I wander over. I spend a good couple of minutes explaining to the folks on the back door at the Target Center that I've left my laminate at the hotel before eventually realising I need to back up and ask a fundamental question."Do Coldplay have a show here today?" "No sir, that is the Xcel Center," comes the reply. I thank them kindly and wander off looking for somewhere to get a coffee.

Oklahoma Review: Coldplay energizes Ford Center audience
Monday, November 17, 2008
Crowd: Estimated 20,000.Top highlight: In an evening full of highlights, "Viva la Vida' was one of the crowd's favorites, reports NewsOK. Lead singer Chris Martin was almost evangelical, dancing and twirling around the stage, conducting the crowd and his fans, ending the song lying on the stage as the crowd sang his final notes.Reviewer's take: Coldplay impressed and energized its Oklahoma City audience playing many favorites from its long career, including "Clocks,' "Fix You,' and many from its latest album, "Viva la Vida.' Martin has so much energy and plays directly to his crowd, keeping them happy the entire time.Discuss this article here onwards.
